Experts in baby sleep for over 30 years

That is an excellent question, and I'll go through it in detail. Here I'll be referring ONLY to cot bed mattresses, built to last five years or more.

Basically, your new baby needs a firm side for the first year. This is for the reduction of cot deaths because your baby is more susceptible to SIDS in its first year.

Dual-Sided Mattresses - Are They Worth It?

Cot bed mattresses are now available with one side being extra firm for the first year. After the first year, the SIDS risk decreases as your baby's head and neck get stronger and your baby can sit up unaided and roll over. The other side is made softer and more comfortable for a heavier baby.

You can still flip these mattresses to increase longevity. "Sounds good!" The downside is your baby will NOT have the same feel on each side. The mattress is built to have one side last a year and the other last four years!

A Better Approach

This can be improved on: have a mattress where both sides are identical. The foam covering the pocket springs is of high density. This foam and pocket sprung base will meet BOTH the critical needs of your baby AND, after 12 months, meets the comfort and durability needed for a toddler.

Now you have a mattress that can be flipped over to increase its longevity. Makes a lot of sense!

How It Works

The exceptional extra-firm foam layer surrounding the encapsulated pocket springs won't allow any dangerous indentation whatsoever. The mattress is firm and flat. The pocket springs are good quality (joined length and width), offering varying support to avoid pressure points underneath the high-density foam.

This combined higher-grade construction offers excellent support and comfort for toddlers. The big bonus is you can flip this mattress to increase its longevity, and your baby or toddler feels the SAME benefits from either side.

Best Components from Newborn to Five Years Old

Fibre

Yes, it's breathable, doesn't smell, and can be made from recycled plastic bottles - but that's where its value ends. Fibre is firm and unforgiving. It's not dense enough to provide any long-term comfort and stability. "It fails to meet the expected standard" - but it is the cheapest buy by a long way.

Foam

This has to be of a higher quality to meet the standard of "high density and rigidity". You need to see a standard in the marketing descriptions, something like "35/135" - this is the value of excellent foam rating.

Compare this to foam with a specification of 24/124 - this won't give you a mattress that will last five years. It's unacceptable quality for this task.

You'll see foams described as "Nursery Foam" or "Cot-Safe Foam" - these are meaningless terms used to give the impression of quality, but they carry no regulation.

Coir, Wool, and Pocket Springs

Yes, these compare well with our desired double-sided foam quality mattresses. Manufacturers who use these components are supplying top-quality mattresses - newborn to five years is easily achievable.

The Cot Bed Mattress Cover

These covers must offer waterproofness, breathability, and temperature control. This is important because foam is an insulator, and it's vital to help keep the mattress cool. By using a pocket spring core, this removes most of the foam insulation and allows air to flow over the pocket springs.

Clearly, the cover has to be washable at 60°C - the temperature needed to kill dust mites and other bacteria.

A spare cover would be advantageous to keep your mattress hygienic, especially after the 3am nappy failure (it always happens at that time!).

Last but by no means least, the cover must be durable so it will last you the five years. Look for a five-year guarantee with your purchase.
