Experts in baby sleep for over 30 years

Before we dive into the great cot vs cot bed debate, lets be honest from out point of view  it’s really all about the mattress.

Whichever beautifully crafted wooden structure you choose, it’s the mattress that’s doing 99% of the hard work,  keeping your baby properly supported, safe, and comfortable on a welcoming, breathable, waterproof, and hygienic surface.

So, cot or cot bed? Here’s how they differ.

Why choose a cot?

A cot is smaller, and many parents feel their baby looks more settled and less “lost” in it.

The main advantage of a cot is that most have two mattress height settings — some even have three. This makes lifting your baby in and out much easier, especially if you’re trying to protect a slightly temperamental back.

Many cots also have drop sides, adding a bit more convenience in those early days.

If you use a cot from birth, your baby will be lying flat, so you can keep the mattress base at the highest level. Once they can sit up, it’s time to lower it to the middle setting — this helps prevent any ambitious escape attempts. And when they start pulling themselves up to stand, the base goes to the lowest level… because by then, they’re basically training for the Baby Olympics.

It also gives you a lovely clear milestone. At around two to three years old, your baby graduates from the cot and officially becomes a toddler. Out comes the cot, in comes the single bed — and, naturally, a serious bedroom décor upgrade to match their new “big kid” status. Goodbye soft pastels, hello dinosaurs, princesses or something involving diggers.

Why choose a cot bed?

A cot bed can delay the need to buy a single bed. It’s designed to last longer,  until five or six years old. At around two or three, the sides are removed and it converts into a toddler bed.

One thing worth noting: a cot bed converted into a toddler bed typically measures around 140 cm long. For context, the average height of an eight-year-old is between 122–135 cm. With a good-quality mattress, there’s no question it will last.

In fact, over the past 25 years, we’ve had plenty of feedback from parents telling us their children happily stayed on our mattresses in the toddler bed right up to eight years old and beyond

At the end of the day, whichever frame you choose, investing in the right mattress makes all the difference  and that’s where comfort, support, and longevity really come from.

A Little Market Research

Out of curiosity, I wandered into the wild world of cots and cot beds online. Prices start around £200, drift happily up to £1,500, and then  if you fancy some exotic wood grain and a “statement colourway” the  price can rocket to £4,000.

Here’s the interesting part:
Many cots come bundled with a mattress… but that mattress usually arrives with very little information. No real detail about what it’s made of, how breathable it is, or how long it’ll last. Guarantees are vague at best, often along the lines of “yes, a mattress is included.”

Why? Because if manufacturers added a proper, top quality mattress, it would bump the price up by £200 or more. Suddenly, that gorgeous cot doesn’t look so competitive next to the neighbouring “value bundle” with the free mattress and shiny price tag.

A Quick Reality Check

A genuinely high-quality cot bed mattress  breathable, supportive, waterproof, washable, hygienic, durable, and backed by a five-year guarantee (which is how long you’ll need it) — costs about £200.

Put that inside a mid-range cot and, voilà:
it suddenly looks “overpriced” next to cheaper options that come with a mattress that’s… well… technically a mattress.

So most manufacturers stick in a basic one and move on.
It’s not bad business — it’s just sales logic.

Which is why we always say:
Buy your cot for style.  But choose your mattress for  safety, support and  comfort,  breathable, waterproof and durable

In All Seriousness

We’ve seen cots costing over £3,000 — polished to perfection, handcrafted, probably whispered into existence by Scandinavian design angels,  paired with mattresses that look like they escaped from a budget hotel.

Moses baskets can be even worse. Some of those mattresses appear to be more protective packaging than sleeping surface.

We’re not sure your baby will deeply appreciate the artisanal joinery, the hand-finished varnish, and the tasteful curves of the woodwork and won’t mind at all that the mattress beneath them has the structural integrity of a folded towel.!

Our Honest View

If your budget allows, absolutely choose the cot or cot bed you love, one that fits your space and makes you smile every time you walk past it.

Just remember: the mattress is where the magic happens.
You can keep the frame forever (especially if you’re sentimental), but it’s the mattress that delivers comfort, health, and those precious, peaceful nights.

A Final Thought (Landfill-Free, Please)

Over the years, we’ve had loads of feedback from parents telling us their high-quality mattresses didn’t end up in landfill  they were reused again and again.

So when you’re finished with your cot, don’t bin the mattress.
Wrap it in plastic, store it with your lovely cot or cot bed, and keep it safe for the next little guest.

Please do have a read of our article “New Baby, New Mattress.”
That phrase made sense in the late ’80s,  but materials, fabrics, and quality have come a long way since then.

Please don’t send your lovely mattress to landfill.
It’s still got plenty of good nights left in it.

I am not ignoring or playing down  the benefits of a lovely nursery

Designing our baby’s nursery was such an exciting time for us. It wasn’t just about choosing a cot or cot bed  it wrapped us both up in this wonderful feeling, knowing we were creating a space full of love and care. Every little decision, from soft pastels to a perfectly rocking chair for midnight hugs and feeds, made us feel proud and happy,  we were building a little world just for our baby.

The nursery became more than décor; it became a warm, welcoming space that reflected how much we cared. And the fun didn’t stop there! Before we knew it, those sweet bunnies and sleepy stars gave way to dinosaurs, superheroes, or a world map ready for adventures. Watching the room evolve as our little one grew from tiny dreamer to curious explorer has been one of the joys of parenthood.

Of course, investing in a good-quality mattress is key but these four walls hold the bedtime stories, lullabies, and hugs
