Is Swaddling Safe for My Newborn?
Published 12 Jan 2026
Swaddling babies was introduced in ancient times, with some of the earliest evidence dating back to 4000 BC!
In 1991, with the advent of the Back to Sleep campaign put forward by the Lullaby Trust to reduce cot deaths, swaddling was not recommended as the go-to way to sleep your newborn baby.
The Benefits
However, swaddling does offer sleep and security and can be calming for some newborn babies.
How to Swaddle Safely
Swaddling must be done safely using a light, very breathable blanket. When you swaddle your baby, ensure they can move their legs freely - otherwise, this may impact hip development.
You should still place your swaddled baby on their back, and any signs they can roll over means replacing the swaddle with a sleep sack.
The Bottom Line
There's no right or wrong way - swaddling can be both good and bad depending on your baby. Just make sure you follow the safety guidelines!
